As per the prescribed Gatka Rules and Regulations-2017 of National Gatka Association of India (NGAI), there are TWO types of events in one age group namely ; Single Soti and Farri-Soti which are further divided into Freestyle and Full Strike techniques. Each event is played as individually and team event by men and women. A new competitive event have also been added from January, 2017 ; the ‘Gatka Mixed Event’ in which boy and girl fight with each other in individual as well as team event.
From Sub-Junior to Senior level, there will be following events/competitions in following age groups :-
AGE GROUPS :
In all types of official Gatka tournaments/events, Gatkabaaz (players) shall play in the Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior age groups as follows i.e :
- SUB-JUNIOR :
Bhujhang (ਭੁਝੰਗ) : U-14
- JUNIOR :
Tufang (ਤੁਫੰਗ) : U-17
- SENIOR :
Sool (ਸੂਲ) : U-19
Saiff (ਸੈਫ) : U-22
Sipar (ਸਿਪਰ) : U-25
Siprar (ਸਿਪਰਾਰ) : U-28
GATKA EVENTS IN A TOURNAMENT (for men & women)

- Single Soti (Freestyle and Full Strike Techniques) :
(a) Individual – one to one fight
(b) Team Event – 3 players and one substitute
(c) Mixed Individual -one to one fight (Boy and Girl)
(d) Mixed Team Event -3 players and one substitute (2 Boys and 2 Girls)

- Farri-Soti (Freestyle and Full Strike Techniques) :
(a) Individual – one to one fight
(b) Team Event – 3 players and one substitute
(c) Mixed Individual -one to one fight (Boy and Girl)
(d) Mixed Team Event -3 players and one extra (2 Boys and 2 Girls)
Note : It is clarified here that Gatka Weapons Demonstration events shall not be played and competed in the schools, colleges and university level sports tournaments. This event shall be played during Virsa Sambhal (Traditional) Gatka tournaments only.
