Recognition of Gatka

  1. The Government of Punjab had enlisted the Gatka game in its State Sports Policy in 2015 for permitting gradation of Gatka players’ certificates. With this gradation facility, now Gatka players can also avail 3 % reserve quota fixed for sportspersons during admissions in academic/professional colleges/universities and getting government jobs.
  2. The School Games Federation of India (SGFI) had included Gatka game in National School Games calendar in 2015.
  3. Department of Education, Government of Punjab had also incorporated Gatka game in the state school games besides colleges and universities from 2009. School Education Department, Punjab is organizing Punjab State Inter-District Gatka tournaments since 2010.
  4. The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) SAS Nagar organises cultural competitions including Gatka every year.
  5. The PSEB awards three marks in the total marks to all sportspersons including Gatka players during the annual physical practical examinations.
  6. The PSEB awards 25 and 15 marks in the grand total marks of +2 class examinations of players every year who participates in the National and State tournaments respectively.
  7. The PSEB had included academic lessons on Gatka in its school textbooks.
  8. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) had also incorporated Gatka in national university sports calendar from 2015 but the Punjabi University Patiala had started to hold All India Inter-University Gatka (Men-Women) prize money Tournaments from 2011 to 2014.
  9. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) had also recognized Gatka as indigenous martial art of India and affiliated a Gatka Training Centre in Amritsar.
  10. Many colleges/universities in Punjab are offering admissions to Gatka players without any admission fees or at a minimum course fees to raise their Gatka teams.
  11. The WGF had signed a MOU with Punjabi University Patiala in 2013 to launch ‘Diploma in Gatka Training’ having one year duration to enable the graduates for employability as Gatka coaches/instructors.
  12. The National Gatka Association of India (NGAI) and World Gatka Federation (WGF) have planned to include the Gatka game in the Olympic Games. To realize this target the NGAI and WGF have formulated a “Vision Document-2030” to accomplish the aims during the coming decade to promote and enrich this game by latest know how.
  13. Once declared as diminishing art, Gatka is now flourishing at its own motherland and in demand to hold its demonstration at special occasions, celebrations, important events, marriages, national days like Independence Day and Republic Day.
